The traffic in Beijing is something one should note before they
begin their tour in Beijing.
The rush hours are usually from 7-9 in the morning and 5-7 in the
evening. This is the basic rush hour, however there are part of
Beijing that are constantly overwhelmed by traffic. These include
the high tourist attractions such as the highway to the Great Walls,
near and around the forbidden city and Tiananmen Square.
There are 5 completed rings with an additional 6th ring in
construction. These ‘rings’ support the traffic in Beijing to get to
your destination. The second ring closest to the center of Beijing
and as you go further out of the city the number increases. Second
ring and Third ring are usually the high traffic rings as they pass
by major attraction and business points such as the lama temple,
embassy district in Sanlitun and the world trade center in Guomao on
the east side of the city.
Beijing used Olympics-time odd-even car restriction policy
in the month of July, August
and September of 2008. After the Olympics, the return to Beijing's
traffic- and
smog-heavy status quo marked
the end of what may had been
the world's largest pollution control experiment: a restriction on
cars, factories and construction that lasted for two months and
resulted in the clearest skies Beijing has seen in a decade and
raised vehicle speeds 10 percent to 43 kph.
A car ban will however is being implemented for government-owned
vehicles based on the last digit of their license plate number. Its
unlikely it will be very effective, considering that officials often
have access to a number of different cars: if one car isn't allowed
on the roads, another is usually on hand.
Driving in Beijing is painful experience. Be prepared to sit in
traffic during rush hours on your tour. Also if you take our shuttle
